Grana Padano is a similarly ancient cousin of Italys famous Parmiggiano-Reggiano. Its origins can be traced to Milan in the twelfth century, when the cheese was made by Cistercian monks. Use Grana Padano anywhere a sturdy grating cheese is called for, though it is also enjoyable as a table cheese.
